How to pay contractors in Austria

Companies pay a contractor in Austria by euro bank transfer over SEPA to the contractor’s IBAN, against an invoice, from their own bank or through a payout platform. The money is simple to move; what decides the tool is how the engagement is documented, because Austria classifies contractors through its social-insurance funds and the contract type matters as much as the label.

There is no currency control (TFEU Art. 63, checked 2026-09-29), and since 9 October 2025 every euro-area bank must send SEPA Instant at no extra cost over a standard transfer (oenb.at, checked 2026-09-29). Most contractors are sole traders with a trade licence or Neue Selbständige without one, insured with the SVS at 18.5% pension and 6.8% health contributions on their income (wko.at, checked 2026-09-29).

The Austrian twist is the freier Dienstvertrag. A person who works for you essentially in person, with no significant business assets of their own and no trade licence, is ASVG-insured as a free service provider, with contributions due from the client (§4(4) ASVG). Where the work is under your direction, it is plain employment (Scheinselbständigkeit).

For one contractor with a trade licence and several clients, a SEPA transfer or Wise is enough. A team, or someone working full-time inside your organisation, points to a platform that keeps contracts and closing documents, or to a Contractor of Record. Classification, contributions and IP are covered in our hiring guide.

Key facts

Currency
Euro (EUR); Austria is in the euro area and SEPA
Contractor's usual legal form
Sole trader with a trade licence (Gewerbe; IT services are a free trade) or a Neue Selbständige working without one; some invoice through a GmbH
Contractor's social insurance
SVS under the GSVG: 18.5% pension, 6.8% health, 1.53% Selbständigenvorsorge, plus €12.95 a month accident cover; base €551.10 to €8,085 a month in 2026
Working payout rails
SEPA Instant and standard SEPA transfers in EUR; SWIFT in USD or other currencies; Wise; payout platforms
FX / currency control
None: EU law bars restrictions on payments, including with non-EU countries; banks still run AML and sanctions checks
What the contractor needs to receive money
A trade registration or SVS registration as a Neue Selbständige, a tax number, a UID (VAT number) if you are an EU business, a EUR IBAN
Key risk
Scheinselbständigkeit: personal and economic dependence makes the contractor an employee under §4(2) ASVG; contributions are assessed 3 years back, 5 if reporting duties were missed
Documents the payer should keep
Werkvertrag or services contract, invoices (with both UIDs and the reverse-charge note for EU payers), proof of payment, Form W-8BEN for US payers

How to choose: four questions for paying a contractor in Austria

1. Is it a Werkvertrag, a freier Dienstvertrag or a job?

The contract title does not decide which box applies. A Werkvertrag buys a defined result. A freier Dienstvertrag buys ongoing services without personal dependence. An employee works in personal and economic dependence for pay (§4(2) ASVG, checked 2026-09-29): your hours, your workplace, your instructions.

The middle box has its own trap. A free service provider who works essentially in person, has no significant business assets of their own and holds no trade licence is insured under the ASVG, not with the SVS (§4(4) ASVG). Contributions are then due unless pay stays under €551.10 a month in 2026 (bmf.gv.at, checked 2026-09-29).

You or the contractor can ask the SVS to review an existing GSVG insurance; an agreed SVS–ÖGK decision binds both funds unless the facts change (oegk.at, checked 2026-09-29).

If the work is result-based and the contractor has a trade licence: a transfer rail or a contractor management platform. If the role drifts toward set hours and one client: a Contractor of Record. 4dev acts as Contractor of Record — the contracting party for each contractor — which reduces reclassification risk. Other COR products come from Deel, Remote, Multiplier, Native Teams, Rivermate and Mellow; read the liability clause in the COR contract, not the product name. If it is really a job: an Employer of Record such as Deel, Remote, Multiplier or Oyster.

2. Does your company have a seat in the EU, the EEA or Switzerland?

This changes who handles a reclassification. Without a seat or establishment there, the employer does not register the worker: the worker files the reports and pays both the employer and employee contributions, with the split agreed between the two sides (§35(4)(b) and §53(3)(b) ASVG, oegk.at, checked 2026-09-29).

On VAT, an EU client needs the contractor’s UID and an invoice with both UID numbers and a note that the tax liability passes to the recipient (usp.gv.at, checked 2026-09-29). A small contractor under the €55,000 Kleinunternehmer threshold is not excused: serving an EU business, they must apply for a UID and file a recapitulative statement (wko.at, checked 2026-09-29). A client outside the EU simply receives a net invoice.

If you are an EU business: collect the UID and check it in VIES before the first payment. If you are outside Europe: agree in writing who pays what if contributions are ever claimed.

3. What currency do you pay from?

From euros in an EU account, pay by SEPA. Since 9 October 2025 Austrian banks must send instant transfers at no extra cost over a standard one (oenb.at, checked 2026-09-29).

From dollars, a USD wire into a euro account costs the contractor. A Styrian Raiffeisenbank’s May 2026 tariff charges 2.75‰ (minimum €5.50) plus €8.50 handling on a foreign-currency payment into a euro account, and €6.50 in USD clearing charges (raiffeisen.at, checked 2026-09-29). Wise showed USD 5.47 to send USD 1,000 to Austria by direct debit, delivered in euros (wise.com, checked 2026-09-29).

If you hold euros: SEPA from your bank or any platform. If you hold dollars: a provider that converts at a disclosed rate and pays out locally in EUR.

4. How many contractors, and at what invoice size?

Platform pricing is either a percentage per payout or a monthly seat. At 3%, the percentage costs the same as a $29 seat on a $967 monthly invoice and a $40 seat on $1,333. A $99 Contractor of Record fee matches 3% at $3,300 a month, and a $325 one at about $10,833.

With five or ten contractors, the file per person (contract, invoices, UID check, proof of payment) becomes monthly work, and it is the record you would hand over in an SVS–ÖGK status review.

If you pay one contractor and your accountant accepts invoices: your bank or Wise. If you pay a team: a platform with a document flow. Compare the field in the contractor payouts rating.

What the Austrian contractor needs to get paid

Set-upRegistrationSocial insurance
Gewerbe (sole trader with a trade licence)Trade registration; IT services (“Dienstleistungen in der automatischen Datenverarbeitung und Informationstechnik”) are a free trade with no qualification testSVS under the GSVG from the licence date; with income up to €6,613.20 and turnover up to €55,000 an exemption from pension and health cover can be requested
Neue Selbständige (self-employed without a trade licence)Tax office; SVS registration within one month once income will exceed the thresholdSVS under the GSVG once annual income exceeds €6,613.20
GmbH (limited company)Commercial register; minimum capital €10,000Owner-manager with 50% or more is GSVG-insured; you contract with the company

Sources: WKO on IT services, usp.gv.at on Neue Selbständige, SVS values, SVS on Kleinunternehmer, WKO on the GmbH, all checked 2026-09-29.

Contributions. In 2026 the SVS charges 18.5% for pension, 6.8% for health and 1.53% for the Selbständigenvorsorge, on a monthly base from €551.10 to €8,085, plus €12.95 a month for accident insurance (wko.at, checked 2026-09-29). They come out of the contractor’s rate.

VAT. The standard rate is 20% (usp.gv.at, checked 2026-09-29). A Kleinunternehmer charges no VAT if gross turnover stayed within €55,000 last year and this year, with a 10% tolerance in the current year (usp.gv.at, checked 2026-09-29). Services supplied abroad fall outside that regime (wko.at, checked 2026-09-29), so your B2B invoice carries no Austrian VAT either way. For an EU client it shows both UID numbers and the reverse-charge note.

To be paid, the contractor needs a EUR IBAN in their own name and, each period, an invoice. Classification, contract terms and IP are in our hiring guide.

Documents and tax on your side

Withholding. None for a foreign client paying a self-employed contractor. The contractor files an income tax return by 30 April, or 30 June through FinanzOnline, and pays advance instalments (usp.gv.at, checked 2026-09-29). You pay the invoice gross.

US payers. Collect Form W-8BEN from a sole trader and Form W-8BEN-E from a GmbH. Pay for services is sourced where the work is performed, and foreign-source income paid to a non-resident is not subject to NRA withholding (irs.gov; irs.gov, checked 2026-09-29), so no 1099. The US–Austria treaty, signed on 31 May 1996 and effective from 1 January 1999, taxes independent services in the US only when performed there through a fixed base regularly available to the contractor (Article 14; irs.gov, checked 2026-09-29).

What to keep, per contractor:

  1. The signed Werkvertrag or services contract: deliverables, rate, currency and the usage rights you need.
  2. Each invoice; for EU payers, the contractor’s UID, your UID, the reverse-charge note and a VIES check.
  3. Proof of payment matching each invoice.
  4. W-8BEN or W-8BEN-E (US payers), and any SVS–ÖGK status decision.

Where payments to Austria break

  • A USD wire lands short. At the Styrian Raiffeisenbank above, a USD 1,000 payment into a euro account costs the contractor about €20.50 in fees before the bank’s conversion rate. From a third country the payer can even choose BEN and push every fee onto the contractor; inside the EU/EEA that option is not allowed.
  • A name mismatch on the payee check. Since 9 October 2025 the payer’s bank shows whether the name matches the account holder, nearly matches or does not match, and the payer decides whether to go on (oenb.at, checked 2026-09-29). Use the name exactly as the bank holds it; a GmbH’s account is in its registered name.
  • The contractor turns out to be a freier Dienstnehmer. Without a trade licence or significant business assets, a person working for you essentially in person is ASVG-insured under §4(4), and contributions are due unless pay stays under €551.10 a month (bmf.gv.at, checked 2026-09-29). Ask whether the contractor holds a trade licence before signing.
  • Reclassification after the fact. Contributions can be assessed three years back, or five where reporting duties were missed (§68 ASVG, checked 2026-09-29). SVS contributions already paid are credited against the employer contributions owed (oegk.at, checked 2026-09-29), so the bill is the difference. Without an EU, EEA or Swiss seat, the worker files and pays both shares, and the split with you is a matter of agreement.
  • An EU payer’s invoice without UIDs. A Kleinunternehmer may never have applied for a UID. Without it and the reverse-charge note the invoice does not meet the requirements; ask for a UID and a corrected invoice before paying.

See contractor misclassification and the Contractor of Record rating.

Frequently asked questions

What's the cheapest way to pay a contractor in Austria?

From a euro account at an EU bank, a SEPA transfer: since 9 October 2025 every euro-area bank must send instant transfers at no extra cost over a standard one (oenb.at, checked 2026-09-29). From dollars, Wise showed USD 3.44 to send USD 1,000 to Austria from a Wise balance, USD 5.47 by direct debit and USD 9.87 by bank transfer (wise.com, checked 2026-09-29). A 3% platform fee on the same amount is USD 30 and includes the contract and documents.

Can I pay a contractor in Austria in USD?

Yes. There is no currency control, but an Austrian contractor's account is usually in euros and the receiving bank charges for the wire. A Styrian Raiffeisenbank's May 2026 tariff takes 2.75‰ (at least €5.50) plus an €8.50 handling fee on a foreign-currency payment into a euro account, and €6.50 in USD clearing charges, so about €20.50 on USD 1,000 before its conversion rate (raiffeisen.at, checked 2026-09-29). Paying EUR against a EUR invoice avoids this.

Do I need to withhold tax when paying a contractor in Austria?

No. A self-employed contractor pays income tax by assessment, filing a return by 30 April of the following year, or 30 June through FinanzOnline, and makes advance payments during the year (usp.gv.at, checked 2026-09-29). In 2026 the rate is 0% up to €13,539 and 50% above €104,859, with 55% over €1 million. US payers collect Form W-8BEN; pay for work done in Austria is foreign-source income, so no 1099.

Will an Austrian contractor charge my company VAT?

Not for a B2B service to a business abroad: the service is supplied where the client runs its business (§3a(6) UStG). For an EU client the invoice shows both UID numbers and a note that the tax liability passes to the recipient (usp.gv.at, checked 2026-09-29). A contractor under the €55,000 Kleinunternehmer threshold still has to apply for a UID before serving an EU business (wko.at, checked 2026-09-29). The standard rate is 20%.

What is Scheinselbständigkeit in Austria, and does it reach a foreign client?

It is false self-employment: someone working in personal and economic dependence for pay is an employee under §4(2) ASVG, whatever the contract says. If the employer has no seat or establishment in the EU, EEA or Switzerland, the worker must register and pay both the employer and employee contributions, and the split is agreed with the client (§35(4)(b) and §53(3)(b) ASVG; oegk.at, checked 2026-09-29). Contributions can be assessed three years back, five where reporting duties were missed (§68 ASVG).

Werkvertrag or freier Dienstvertrag: which one is a contractor in Austria on?

A Werkvertrag buys a result; a freier Dienstvertrag buys ongoing services without personal dependence. A free service provider who works essentially in person without significant own business assets, and holds no trade licence, is insured under the ASVG (§4(4)) with contributions due from the client, unless pay stays under €551.10 a month in 2026 (bmf.gv.at, checked 2026-09-29). Since 1 January 2026 open-ended freie Dienstverträge carry notice periods of four weeks, six after two years (oegk.at, checked 2026-09-29).

How much does an Austrian contractor pay in social insurance?

Through the SVS: 18.5% for pension, 6.8% for health and 1.53% for the Selbständigenvorsorge, on a monthly base between €551.10 and €8,085 in 2026, plus €12.95 a month for accident insurance (wko.at, checked 2026-09-29). A Neue Selbständige without a trade licence is insured only once annual income exceeds €6,613.20 (svs.at, checked 2026-09-29). These costs sit in the contractor's rate, not on your side.

Does the US–Austria tax treaty matter when I pay an Austrian contractor?

Only if the contractor works in the US. The treaty was signed in Vienna on 31 May 1996 and took effect on 1 January 1999; under Article 14 an Austrian resident's independent services are taxed only in Austria unless performed in the US and attributable to a fixed base regularly available there (irs.gov, checked 2026-09-29). For work done in Austria, US source rules already make the income foreign-source.
