A foreign company pays an Australian contractor against an invoice, usually in AUD to a bank account identified by a BSB and account number, through a provider that converts and pays locally or by SWIFT wire from its own bank. The rail is cheap and fast. The choice comes down to the currency the contractor invoices in and whether the engagement would hold up as independent contracting.
Australia has no currency control: the dollar has floated since 1983 (rba.gov.au, checked 2026-10-07). Wise delivers AUD to a BSB and account number or a PayID, usually within 0–2 working days after it receives and converts the money (wise.com, checked 2026-10-07). Receiving a SWIFT wire costs the contractor up to AUD 11 at CommBank, before any intermediary charge (commbank.com.au, checked 2026-10-07).
The Australian trap is classification. Since 26 August 2024 the Fair Work Act asks for the real substance, practical reality and true nature of the relationship, not the label in the contract, and an ABN does not make a worker a contractor (fairwork.gov.au, checked 2026-10-07). Calling an employee a contractor is sham contracting, penalised at AUD 109,200 to AUD 546,000 per contravention for a business, depending on its size (fairwork.gov.au, checked 2026-10-07).
One independent contractor with other clients is well served by Wise or a bank wire. A team, or full-time work for one payer, points to a contractor platform or a Contractor of Record. Classification, super, payroll tax and IP in detail are in our hiring guide.
Australian dollar (AUD), floating since 1983; Australian banks also hold foreign-currency accounts, so a contractor may invoice in AUD or USD
Contractor's usual legal form
Sole trader with an ABN, or a Pty Ltd company; an ABN alone does not make a worker a contractor
Working payout rails
AUD to a BSB and account number or a PayID through a provider such as Wise; SWIFT wires into an AUD or foreign-currency account; platform payouts
FX / currency control
None: the AUD floats. Banks report every international transfer into Australia to AUSTRAC, whatever the amount
What the contractor needs to receive money
An Australian account: 6-digit BSB plus a 5–9 digit account number (no IBAN), in the name that appears on the invoice
Contractor's tax in 2026–27
Resident income tax: nil to AUD 18,200, 15% to 45,000, 30% to 135,000, 37% to 190,000, 45% above, plus the 2% Medicare levy
GST on your invoice
Registration is required at AUD 75,000 of GST turnover; services to a non-resident outside Australia are generally GST-free, so the invoice shows no GST
Documents the payer should keep
Services contract, invoices with the contractor's ABN, proof of payment; Form W-8BEN (individual) or W-8BEN-E (company) for US payers; no 1099
How to choose: five questions before you pay an Australian contractor
1. Does the person work like staff?
Since 26 August 2024 the test for a constitutionally covered business, which includes a foreign corporation, is the whole of relationship test: the real substance, practical reality and true nature of the relationship, including the contract and how it is performed in practice (fairwork.gov.au, checked 2026-10-07). The factors are control over how the work is done, financial risk, who supplies tools, the right to delegate, hours and whether the work is expected to continue. A worker with an ABN or who issues invoices is not automatically a contractor (fairwork.gov.au, checked 2026-10-07).
Misrepresenting an employee as a contractor is sham contracting: up to AUD 109,200 per contravention for a business under 15 employees and AUD 546,000 for a larger one (fairwork.gov.au, checked 2026-10-07). The defence is that you reasonably believed the worker was a contractor.
If the contractor sets their own hours, has other clients and is paid per deliverable: a transfer rail or contractor management platform. If one person works your hours for you alone: a Contractor of Record; read the liability clause in the contract, not the product name. 4dev acts as Contractor of Record, the contracting party for each contractor, which reduces reclassification risk. If it is really a job: an Employer of Record such as Deel, Remote, Multiplier or Oyster.
2. Is the contract for labour or for a result?
For super, the ATO treats a contractor as an employee if the contract is mainly for their labour (more than half its value), pays for their personal labour and skills rather than a specified result, and requires them to do the work personally. An ABN does not change that (ato.gov.au, checked 2026-10-07). The ATO page is written for Australian payers; ask an Australian adviser whether it reaches you.
If you can write the contract around deliverables and acceptance: any rail. If the honest description is “hours at a rate”: a platform with editable contracts, or an EOR.
3. In which currency does the contractor want to be paid?
Match the invoice. CommBank charges up to AUD 11 to receive a wire, for an AUD account or a foreign-currency account alike, and overseas banks’ charges can come on top (commbank.com.au, checked 2026-10-07). Wise pays AUD to a BSB and account number or a PayID, up to AUD 5 million per transfer (wise.com, checked 2026-10-07).
If the contractor invoices in AUD and you hold USD: a provider that converts and pays AUD locally. If the contractor invoices in USD and has a foreign-currency account: a USD wire or a platform USD payout.
4. One contractor or a team?
On a USD 5,000 monthly invoice a 3% fee is USD 150, a platform seat costs USD 29–49, and a flat per-contract fee such as Multiplier’s $40 is lower still. A percentage model suits small or irregular invoices; a seat or flat fee suits large, steady ones.
If you pay one contractor: your bank or Wise. If you pay a team and want contract, invoice and payment matched per person: a contractor platform with a document flow.
5. Does the invoice need to be right for the contractor’s tax?
A contractor registered for GST issues a GST-free invoice to a business outside Australia when the service is used outside Australia (ato.gov.au, checked 2026-10-07). Registration is required at AUD 75,000 of GST turnover (ato.gov.au, checked 2026-10-07). Your bookkeeping needs the ABN on each invoice, and a US payer needs a W-8BEN or W-8BEN-E per person.
If you have one or two contractors: collect the ABN and tax form yourself. If you have many and want them collected at onboarding: a platform that does KYC and documents in one flow.
Rule of thumb. One independent contractor invoicing in AUD: Wise or a bank wire. A USD invoice to a foreign-currency account: a wire. A team: a contractor platform. One person working your hours: a Contractor of Record or an EOR. Compare the field in the contractor payouts rating.
A contractor platform that acts as Contractor of Record: 4dev contracts with each contractor and the client contracts with 4dev, which reduces reclassification risk without removing it. It onboards contractors with automatic KYC, keeps IP assignment and closing documents in one flow, and pays out by bank transfer, card or USDT across 150+ countries on a published fee of 3% or less.
Why it fitsContract, closing documents and payout from one record, the terms-plus-practice trail a whole-of-relationship review weighs; 3% or less per payout.
A mature, transparent-fee cross-border payments leader: pay up to 1,000 contractors at once via BatchTransfer, send to 160 countries and hold 40 currencies at the mid-market rate with upfront, usage-based fees. Excellent as a contractor-payout rail — but it is not a contractor-management or compliance tool (no contracts, no EOR/COR, no payroll).

There is no currency control. Australia has a floating exchange rate, in place since 1983 (rba.gov.au, checked 2026-10-07). Banks and remittance providers must report international funds transfer instructions of any value into or out of Australia to AUSTRAC (austrac.gov.au, checked 2026-10-07).

An ABN, a bank account, invoices in their own name
Pty Ltd company
Company tax on the company’s profit; the personal services income rules can attribute income back to the individual
Incorporation, an ABN for the company, invoices in the company’s name
ABN. Invoices carry the contractor’s Australian business number. A business outside Australia may be entitled to an ABN only if it carries on an enterprise in Australia or makes supplies connected with Australia (abr.gov.au, checked 2026-10-07). You collect the contractor’s ABN; you do not need one to pay them.
GST. A contractor registers once GST turnover reaches AUD 75,000. A service supplied to a recipient outside Australia and used outside Australia is GST-free, so the invoice carries no GST (ato.gov.au, checked 2026-10-07; ato.gov.au, checked 2026-10-07).
Personal services income. Income a company or trust earns mainly from an individual’s personal skills falls under the ATO’s PSI rules unless the contractor self-assesses as a personal services business: the results test for at least 75% of that income, or another test plus the 80% rule, under which less than 80% may come from one client and its associates (ato.gov.au, checked 2026-10-07).
Bank details. Australia does not use IBANs. An account is a 6-digit BSB and a 5–9 digit account number (wise.com, checked 2026-10-07).
Classification, IP assignment and the payroll-tax and super questions are covered in our hiring guide.
Documents and tax on your side
Withholding. The ATO tells a payer to withhold 47% from a supplier that does not quote an ABN (ato.gov.au, checked 2026-10-07). Whether a foreign payer with no Australian presence is bound by the rule is not stated; require the ABN on every invoice and confirm the position with an Australian adviser.
GST. Nothing to add to a GST-free export invoice. A contractor who adds 10% to an invoice for your foreign business has probably missed the export rule.
Super and payroll tax. Super is owed for a contractor paid mainly for their labour (ato.gov.au, checked 2026-10-07). NSW payroll tax counts payments to contractors as taxable wages unless an exemption applies, at 5.45% above AUD 1.2 million a year, and charges tax in the state where the services are performed wholly (revenue.nsw.gov.au; thresholds; nexus, checked 2026-10-07).
US payers. Collect Form W-8BEN from a sole trader and Form W-8BEN-E from a company. Pay for services is sourced where the work is performed, and foreign-source income paid to a nonresident alien is normally not reported on Form 1042-S (irs.gov; irs.gov, checked 2026-10-07), so no 1099.
What to keep, per contractor:
The signed services contract with scope, rate, currency and IP assignment.
Each invoice, with the contractor’s ABN and the GST treatment.
Proof of payment matching each invoice.
W-8BEN or W-8BEN-E (US payers).
Where payments to Australia break
Name mismatch. Wise needs the recipient’s full legal name to match the bank account, and the PayID name check exists because misdirected payments are a known risk. Put the name exactly as the bank holds it on the contractor’s payment details.
Wrong digits. A BSB is six digits and an account number five to nine. Payment forms that insist on an IBAN stall on Australian details; use the BSB, the account number and the SWIFT code for a wire.
Short-paid wires. CommBank charges up to AUD 11 to receive, and overseas banks’ charges can be deducted before the money arrives, so the contractor receives less than the invoice. A local AUD payout avoids both.
Every inbound transfer is reported. Banks report international transfers of any value to AUSTRAC. A contract and a matching invoice answer a bank’s question about the source.
GST on an export invoice. An invoice that adds 10% to a foreign business probably misses the GST-free treatment. Ask for a corrected invoice before paying tax you cannot recover.
Hours-based contracts. A contract that pays for hours, requires the contractor personally and runs for months invites a sham-contracting claim and a super obligation. Fix the contract before the payment rail.
Frequently asked questions
What's the cheapest way to pay a contractor in Australia?
A provider that pays AUD locally. Wise sends AUD to a BSB and account number or a PayID, up to AUD 5 million per transfer, usually 0–2 working days after it receives and converts the money (wise.com, checked 2026-10-07). A SWIFT wire costs your bank's sending fee, and CommBank charges up to AUD 11 to receive one, plus possible intermediary charges (commbank.com.au, checked 2026-10-07). A 3% platform fee on USD 5,000 is USD 150 and includes the contract and documents.
Can I pay a contractor in Australia in USD?
Yes, if the contractor holds a foreign-currency account. CommBank charges the same receiving fee of up to AUD 11 for a credit to an AUD account regardless of currency, and for a foreign-currency account (commbank.com.au, checked 2026-10-07). Sent to an AUD account, a USD payment is converted by the receiving bank. Agree the invoice currency and account in the contract.
Do I need to withhold tax when paying a contractor in Australia?
The ATO requires a payer to withhold 47% from a supplier that does not quote an ABN (ato.gov.au, checked 2026-10-07). The ATO's page does not say whether this reaches a foreign payer with no Australian enterprise, so confirm it with an Australian adviser, or require the ABN on every invoice. US payers collect Form W-8BEN or W-8BEN-E; work done in Australia is foreign-source income for the US (irs.gov, checked 2026-10-07).
Do I pay GST on an Australian contractor's invoice?
Usually not, if your business is outside Australia. A supply of a service is GST-free when its recipient is outside Australia and the service is used outside Australia (ato.gov.au, checked 2026-10-07). A contractor must register for GST at AUD 75,000 of GST turnover (ato.gov.au, checked 2026-10-07). An invoice that adds 10% to a foreign business needs a second look.
Do I have to pay superannuation for an Australian contractor?
The ATO says contractors paid mainly for their labour are employees for super purposes, even with an ABN: more than half the contract value is for labour, pay does not depend on a result, and the work cannot be delegated (ato.gov.au, checked 2026-10-07). The page does not address a payer with no Australian presence, so check it before signing an hours-based contract. The rate for 2026–27 is 12% (ato.gov.au, checked 2026-10-07).
What is sham contracting, and why does it matter to the payer?
It is misrepresenting an employee as an independent contractor. Courts can impose up to AUD 21,840 per contravention on an individual, AUD 109,200 on a business under 15 employees and AUD 546,000 on a larger one (fairwork.gov.au, checked 2026-10-07). The defence is that the business reasonably believed the worker was a contractor when it made the statement.
Does payroll tax apply to what I pay an Australian contractor?
It can. In NSW payments to a contractor are liable unless one of seven exemptions applies, such as services for 90 days or fewer in a financial year, and the rate is 5.45% above AUD 1.2 million of annual wages (revenue.nsw.gov.au, checked 2026-10-07). Each state sets its own threshold and rate, and a payer with a few contractors is usually well below the threshold.
Can I send money to an Australian contractor with PayID?
A foreign payer usually reaches it through a provider. PayID is an addressing layer on the New Payments Platform, which settles payments 24/7 between Australian institutions (rba.gov.au, checked 2026-10-07). Wise pays AUD to a PayID account as well as to a BSB and account number (wise.com, checked 2026-10-07).
