How to pay contractors in Iceland

Companies pay a contractor in Iceland by bank transfer to the contractor’s Icelandic account: in euros over SEPA, or in krónur through a transfer service or payout platform with a local account. What decides the route is the currency the contract is priced in and who converts it. Iceland is outside the EU and the euro area but inside the EEA and the SEPA schemes (EPC, checked 2026-09-29), and the capital controls imposed in 2008 were lifted for individuals and firms on 14 March 2017 (EFTA, checked 2026-09-29), so contractors can hold euro or dollar accounts at home.

Most contractors work as self-employed individuals on their own kennitala, the national ID number; some invoice through a private limited company (ehf.). Either way they pay themselves a calculated remuneration (reiknað endurgjald) with a floor set by Skatturinn, ISK 1,440,000 a month in 2026 for a specialist working alone, and owe income tax, 6.35% tryggingagjald and at least 15.5% pension on it (skatturinn.is, checked 2026-09-29). Their invoice to a foreign buyer usually carries 0% VAT.

For one contractor on a euro contract, a SEPA transfer or a transfer service is enough. For krónur paid from dollars, compare conversion costs before anything else. For a team, or a full-time role with one client, a platform that produces the contract and documents fits better, or a Contractor of Record. Classification, contributions and IP are covered in our hiring guide.

How to choose: four questions for paying contractors in Iceland

Money moves into Iceland freely. The choice turns on the contract currency, your footing in Iceland, invoice size and how much the work resembles a job.

1. Is the contract priced in euros or in krónur?

A euro contract is paid by SEPA credit transfer to the contractor’s euro account. PSD2 applies across the EEA, including Iceland, since 1 May 2022 (efta.int, checked 2026-09-29), and under it a standard euro transfer must reach the payee’s bank by the end of the next business day (EBA, PSD2 Article 83, checked 2026-09-29). On the receiving side, Íslandsbanki’s price list for individuals, valid from 19 March 2026, charges nothing for an incoming euro payment from the EEA and ISK 680 for other incoming foreign payments (islandsbanki.is, checked 2026-09-29).

With a króna contract, the question is who converts. A USD wire into a króna account is converted by the contractor’s bank at its own rate. Wise quoted 19.18 USD to send 1,000 USD by direct debit, delivered as krónur from its local account, at 120.57 ISK to the dollar on the day we checked (wise.com, checked 2026-09-29).

If the contract is in euros and you hold euros: SEPA from your bank, or any platform that pays to an IBAN. If it is in krónur and you hold dollars: a service that converts at a disclosed rate and pays out locally.

2. Where is your company, and does it have anything in Iceland?

Skatturinn zero-rates sales of services to parties “neither domiciled nor having a venue of operations in Iceland”, provided the services are wholly used abroad (skatturinn.is, checked 2026-09-29). A foreign company with no branch or office in Iceland gets an invoice without VAT; one with a venue there gets 24% from a VAT-registered contractor.

Iceland is outside the EU VAT system, so there is no VIES number to check. An EU business buying the service accounts for VAT itself under Article 196 of the VAT Directive.

If you have no presence in Iceland: expect a 0% invoice and keep the contract that shows who the buyer is. If you do: budget for 24% VAT, or check with an adviser which entity should sign.

3. How large is each monthly invoice?

Icelandic contractor invoices run high because the contractor’s own calculated pay has a floor. For 2026, Skatturinn sets ISK 1,440,000 a month for a specialist working alone, IT specialists included, and ISK 1,199,000 in the first year of business (skatturinn.is, checked 2026-09-29). At Wise’s quoted rate, ISK 1,440,000 is about $11,900, before the contractor adds 6.35% tryggingagjald and pension.

At 3% per payout, a percentage fee equals a $29 monthly seat at about $967 a month, a $49 seat at about $1,633, and a $325 Contractor of Record fee at about $10,833. A full-time Icelandic contractor billing near the floor sits above all three.

If you pay for part-time or project work: percentage pricing or a transfer service. If you pay full-time contractors: compare flat seat and COR fees on your real invoice totals.

4. Does the engagement look like a job?

Calling a contract a verksamningur (services contract) does not make it one: under Icelandic labour law the substance decides, and the Icelandic Confederation of Labour lists the factors weighed, among them who directs the work, working hours, tools, risk, payment method and whether the work is separate from the client’s ordinary business (vinnurettur.asi.is, checked 2026-09-29). An employee is entitled to collective-agreement minimum pay, paid leave and sick pay; see contractor misclassification.

If the work is scoped, multi-client and on the contractor’s own schedule: a transfer rail or a platform with a document flow. If the role looks like a job: a Contractor of Record. 4dev acts as Contractor of Record — the contracting party for each contractor — which reduces reclassification risk. Deel, Remote and Mellow also sign with the contractor as counterparty; read the liability clause in the COR contract, not the product name. If it is a job in substance: an Employer of Record such as Deel, Remote or Oyster. Compare the whole field in the contractor payouts rating.

Sources: PSD2 incorporation from efta.int and timing from PSD2 Article 83 (EBA); receiving fees from Íslandsbanki’s price list for individuals, valid from 19 March 2026; the Wise quote from wise.com; IBAN structure from wise.com (all checked 2026-09-29).

Two things differ from a euro-area country. The EU Instant Payments Regulation is still “under scrutiny for incorporation” into the EEA Agreement (efta.int, checked 2026-09-29), so the EU duties to offer instant euro transfers and Verification of Payee do not yet bind Icelandic banks. And krónur clear in Iceland’s own interbank system; on 24 June 2026 the ECB and Seðlabanki Íslands agreed that króna payments will settle in the Eurosystem’s TIPS from 2028 (ecb.europa.eu, checked 2026-09-29).

What the Icelandic contractor needs to get paid

  • A kennitala. “In Iceland, a bank account can only be opened if you have an Icelandic ID number,” and customers from outside the EEA/EFTA also need a residence permit (islandsbanki.is, checked 2026-09-29). EEA nationals apply in person at Registers Iceland; others get the number through their residence permit application (island.is, checked 2026-09-29). The last ten digits of an Icelandic IBAN are the account holder’s kennitala.
  • Registration with Skatturinn before starting, on form RSK 5.02, including the withholding register, because the contractor withholds tax monthly on their own calculated remuneration (skatturinn.is, checked 2026-09-29).
  • VAT registration once taxable sales pass ISK 2,000,000 in a twelve-month period (skatturinn.is, checked 2026-09-29). Below that, an invoice without a VAT number is normal.
  • An invoice each period. Skatturinn requires it to show the seller’s kennitala and VAT number, the type of sale, quantity, unit and total price; to a foreign buyer the VAT line is 0%.

A contractor with an ehf. invoices from the company, but a controlling owner still has to calculate a salary for themselves. Classification, contributions and IP are covered in our hiring guide.

Documents and tax on your side

VAT. Services sold to a party with no domicile or venue of operations in Iceland, and wholly used abroad, are zero-rated (skatturinn.is, checked 2026-09-29). EU businesses self-account for VAT under Article 196 of the VAT Directive; there is no VIES check, since Iceland is not in the EU VAT system.

Withholding. None for a foreign client. The contractor pays withholding tax on their calculated remuneration every month, at 2026 rates of 31.49% up to ISK 498,122, 37.99% up to ISK 1,398,450 and 46.29% above (skatturinn.is, checked 2026-09-29).

US payers. Collect Form W-8BEN, or W-8BEN-E from an ehf. Personal service income is sourced where the work is performed (irs.gov, checked 2026-09-29), and foreign-source income is exempt from NRA withholding, normally with no Form 1042-S (irs.gov, checked 2026-09-29); no Form 1099-NEC either. The US–Iceland treaty entered into force on 15 December 2008 (home.treasury.gov, checked 2026-09-29) and treats independent services as business profits under Article 7, taxable in the US only through a permanent establishment there (Technical Explanation, checked 2026-09-29).

What to keep, per contractor:

  1. The signed services contract with scope, rate, currency and IP assignment, naming your company as the buyer.
  2. Each invoice, with the contractor’s kennitala and, if registered, VAT number, and the 0% VAT line.
  3. Proof of payment matching each invoice.
  4. W-8BEN (US payers).

On a platform or Contractor of Record model, you keep the platform’s invoice; the platform holds the contractor’s contract.

Where payments to Iceland break

  • A dollar wire into a króna account. The contractor’s bank converts at its own rate, and Íslandsbanki charges ISK 680 to receive a foreign payment that is not a euro payment from the EEA. Agree the invoice currency and have the contractor give the account in that currency.
  • An IBAN that is not the contractor’s own. The last ten digits of an Icelandic IBAN are the holder’s kennitala. If they do not match the kennitala on the invoice, the money goes to someone else’s account; ask before paying.
  • A contractor without a kennitala. Without one there is no Icelandic account to pay into. A contractor who lives abroad and has no Icelandic ID is paid in their country of residence, and the Icelandic rules on this page do not apply to them.
  • Your company has a venue in Iceland. The 0% rate needs a buyer with no domicile or venue of operations in Iceland. A branch or office there means a VAT-registered contractor charges 24%.
  • The króna moves. The rate is set in the foreign exchange market (trade.gov, updated 2026-04-02, checked 2026-09-29), so a rate fixed in krónur leaves the currency risk with you, and a rate fixed in euros or dollars leaves it with the contractor, whose calculated remuneration and taxes are in krónur.
  • Expecting instant euro payments. Euro-area banks must send SEPA Instant, but the regulation has not been incorporated into the EEA Agreement, so Icelandic banks are not yet under that duty. Plan payment dates on next-business-day SEPA.

Frequently asked questions

What's the cheapest way to pay a contractor in Iceland?

If the contract is in euros and you hold euros in the EEA, a SEPA credit transfer: Íslandsbanki's 2026 price list charges the recipient nothing for an incoming euro payment from the EEA, against ISK 680 for other incoming foreign payments (islandsbanki.is, checked 2026-09-29). If the contractor wants krónur and you hold dollars, Wise quoted 19.18 USD to send 1,000 USD by direct debit (wise.com, checked 2026-09-29). A 3% platform fee equals a $29 monthly seat at about $967 a month.

Can I pay a contractor in Iceland in USD or EUR?

Yes. The capital controls Iceland imposed in 2008 were lifted for individuals and firms on 14 March 2017 (efta.int, checked 2026-09-29), and Icelandic banks keep foreign-currency accounts; Íslandsbanki charges nothing for deposits to them. Euros arrive over SEPA, which covers Iceland although it does not use the euro. A USD wire into a króna account is converted by the receiving bank at its own rate.

Do I need to withhold tax when paying a contractor in Iceland?

Not as a foreign client. The self-employed contractor registers with Skatturinn and pays withholding tax monthly on their own calculated remuneration, at 31.49% up to ISK 498,122 a month, 37.99% up to ISK 1,398,450 and 46.29% above (skatturinn.is, checked 2026-09-29). US payers collect Form W-8BEN; work done in Iceland is foreign-source income and not subject to US NRA withholding (irs.gov, checked 2026-09-29).

Will an Icelandic contractor charge my company VAT?

Usually not. Sales of services to parties neither domiciled nor having a venue of operations in Iceland are zero-rated when the services are wholly used abroad (skatturinn.is, checked 2026-09-29). Iceland is outside the EU VAT system, so there is no VIES number to check; an EU business accounts for VAT on the service at home under Article 196 of the VAT Directive. If your company has a venue in Iceland, expect 24%.

What is reiknað endurgjald, and why does it matter to the payer?

It is the salary a self-employed Icelander must calculate for themselves and pay tax, 6.35% tryggingagjald and pension contributions on each month. Skatturinn sets floors: for 2026, ISK 1,440,000 a month for a specialist working alone, IT specialists included, or ISK 1,199,000 in the first year of business (skatturinn.is, checked 2026-09-29). A full-time contractor's invoice has to cover at least that, plus the contributions on it.

Is Iceland in SEPA even though it uses the króna?

Yes. Iceland is one of the three EEA countries outside the EU in the SEPA schemes' geographical scope (europeanpaymentscouncil.eu, checked 2026-09-29), so euro transfers to an Icelandic IBAN run as SEPA payments. The EU Instant Payments Regulation, though, has not yet been incorporated into the EEA Agreement (efta.int, checked 2026-09-29). Krónur clear in Iceland's own interbank system and will settle in the Eurosystem's TIPS from 2028 (ecb.europa.eu, checked 2026-09-29).

Can I pay a contractor who has no Icelandic kennitala into an Icelandic account?

No. Icelandic banks open accounts only for holders of an Icelandic ID number, and non-EEA customers also need a residence permit (islandsbanki.is, checked 2026-09-29). An Icelandic IBAN has 26 characters and its last ten digits are the holder's kennitala (wise.com, checked 2026-09-29). A contractor living abroad is paid to an account in their country of residence.

Does the US–Iceland tax treaty matter when I pay an Icelandic contractor?

Only if the contractor works in the US. The treaty was signed on 23 October 2007 and entered into force on 15 December 2008, generally effective from 1 January 2009 (home.treasury.gov, checked 2026-09-29). It has no separate article on independent personal services: that income falls under Article 7, Business Profits, and is taxable in the US only through a permanent establishment there (Treasury Technical Explanation, checked 2026-09-29).
