Contractor management system (CMS)
A contractor management system (CMS) is software that centralizes the lifecycle of working with independent contractors: onboarding and identity checks, compliant contracts, classification questionnaires, invoicing, tax documents (W-9/W-8BEN, 1099 filing) and cross-border payouts — one system replacing the spreadsheet-plus-bank-portal stack.
The two meanings — check which one you need
“Contractor management system” names two unrelated product categories:
- Workforce CMS (this site’s subject): managing and paying independent professionals — Deel, Remote and the rest of our contractor management rating.
- Safety/prequalification CMS: vetting industrial subcontractors’ insurance, safety records and OSHA training for job sites — ISN/ISNetworld, Avetta, Veriforce. Different buyers, different problem.
Search results and software directories mix the two constantly; if your “contractors” are companies sending crews to a site, you want category two and this site’s rankings won’t help you.
